About the Azad Movie

Azad,” directed by Abhishek Kapoor, is a cinematic blend of passion, rebellion, and animal-human bonding. Two promising newcomers are introduced in the film: Rasha Thadani, the daughter of Raveena Tandon, and Aaman Devgan, the nephew of Ajay Devgn. Surprisingly, however, Azad, the horse, is the true star.

The film, which is set in pre-independence India, centres on Govind, a stable boy who aspires to possess a horse and his special bond with the magnificent stallion Azad. In addition to being essential to the plot, this endearing horse also has a romantic arc with a mare named Bijli.

Plot Highlights

Govind (Aaman Devgan) navigates the challenges of British rule and oppressive zamindars, led by Rai Bahadur (Piyush Mishra). Amid socio-political turmoil, Govind’s love for Azad grows. However, things heat up when he crosses paths with Rai Bahadur’s daughter, Janki (Rasha Thadani), and the dacoit leader Vikram Thakur (Ajay Devgn). From animosity to unexpected alliances, the narrative unfolds with layers of rebellion, romance, and sacrifice.

Performances

  • Ajay Devgn: As Vikram Thakur, he brings intensity and sincerity to his role.
  • Aaman Devgan: Delivers a promising debut with agility and charm.
  • Rasha Thadani: Confident and engaging, especially in her dance number “Uyi Amma.”
  • Piyush Mishra & Mohit Malik: While Mishra’s role is limited, Malik shines as the stylish and ruthless antagonist.
  • Diana Penty: Adds allure in her brief appearance.

Direction & Music

Abhishek Kapoor attempts to create a patriotic epic akin to classics like “Sholay” and “Lagaan.” While the visuals—captured by cinematographer Satyajit Pande—are stunning, the screenplay falters in places. The music, including tracks like “Ajeeb-O-Gareeb” and “Birangay,” fails to leave a lasting impact despite a vibrant Holi number.

Verdict

“Azad” is a visually rich film with noteworthy performances but suffers from a predictable storyline and average CGI (Computer-Generated Imagery). It’s worth seeing once if you enjoy stories about horses or are captivated by tales of revolt.
